Overview

For many people, quitting smoking is an extremely difficult task. Part of this is because nicotine, which can be found in tobacco smoke, is extremely addictive physically. Fortunately, there are a number of products that can be used to help ease the withdrawal symptoms that smokers encounter when they quit. One such product is the medication Chantix, which contains no nicotine and is available only with a prescription.

Step 1

Pick a date to quit smoking. Although you will be taking Chantix for seven days before this date, you may continue to smoke as usual until you reach your "quit date"

Step 2

Take one white Chantix pill per day, starting one week before your "quit date." Take Chantix after eating and swallow it with a full glass (at least eight ounces) of water. Do this for three days.

Step 3

Switch to taking two of the white Chantix pills per day. Take one pill in the morning and one in the evening, again after eating and with water. Follow this routine for four days.

Step 4

Take one blue Chantix pill two times per day, as above. This should coincide with your quit date. Because Chantix has now had time to build up in your system, you should stop smoking "cold turkey."

Step 5

Continue taking Chantix for eleven more weeks, taking one blue pill in the morning and one at night.

Tips and Warnings

  • Even if you have a lapse and smoke while you are on Chantix, you can continue taking the medications and trying to quit smoking.
