Signs & Symptoms of Depression in Adults

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic say that depression is one of the most common illnesses in the world and affects how adults think and behave. Depression is a medical condition that cannot be treated with will power. Instead, once the signs and symptoms of depression in adults are recognized, they can be treated with medication and therapy.

Declining Interest

Depression often shows up as a disinterest in people and activities that the adult previously found exciting or enjoyable. Depressed adults often don't want to participate in anything.

Sadness

Extreme feelings of sadness that won't pass are typical in people who are depressed. While the sadness may be related to a specific event, the reactions seem disproportionate and unending.

Trouble Focusing

People who are depressed have trouble concentrating and focusing on one thing. Their minds tend to wander more often to negative thoughts.

Weight Fluctuations

As they deal with their feelings, many depressed adults turn to food for solace. Others find eating repulsive and quickly lose weight.

Sleep Disruptions

Sudden changes in sleep patterns often emerge as a sign of depression. Whether patients sleep all the time or can't sleep for more than a few hours at a time, they always appear fatigued.

Irritability

Frustrated with a lack of control over emotions, people who are depressed often are more irritable than usual and become easily annoyed.
