Neck and shoulder pain can range from mild discomfort to excruciating pain depending on its cause. Medical professionals have a multitude of methods at their disposal when treating such ailments. Most medical professionals use a combination of two or more approaches. The treatment methods hinge on the type of condition and its severity.

Drugs

Anti-Inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids are commonly used to treat neck and shoulder pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen are all used to treat minor injuries and strains. Anti-Inflammatory drugs can be applied topically to the affected area or can be taken orally. In both cases, these drugs alleviate the pain and prevent swelling and inflammation of the damaged area. Corticosteroid injections are used for serious strains and can treat pain caused by arthritis.

Heat and Exercise

Heat compresses and special exercises are used to cure pain in the neck and shoulder. Heat and moisture placed on the swollen or damaged area dilates blood vessels and allows blood to flow away from the swollen area. This type of treatment is done four to five days after an injury. Exercises are used to strengthen muscles of the shoulder and neck to improve the support of the joints and ligaments.

Surgery

Surgical treatment of the neck and shoulder area is usually used as a last resort. This is used for conditions unresponsive to other treatment methods or those that are life-threatening. Shoulder and neck pain caused by stretched ligaments or repeated shoulder dislocation is cured surgically. This surgery is comprised of shortening the stretched ligaments and removing any bone chips present in the joint.
