Gout is the sudden pain and inflammation caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in a joint. It is precipitated by excessive uric acid in the blood. You might develop gout if your body naturally overproduces uric acid or doesn't eliminate it very well. Foods rich in oxalates and purines may aggravate gout, as may coffee and other stimulants. While cherry juice has not been scientifically proven as an effective remedy for gout, folk wisdom is that it frequently reduces the intensity of attacks and may prevent them altogether by reducing the levels of uric acid in the blood. Proponents claim it takes anywhere from two days to two weeks of drinking cherry juice to feel relief from gout.

Step 1

Eliminate known causes or aggravators of gout, such as excessive alcohol consumption, meat, shellfish and sweetbreads. This will help increase the efficacy of the cherry juice remedy.

Step 2

Drink a minimum of 2 or 3 tbsp. of cherry juice concentrate--or 8 to 16 oz. of regular-strength cherry juice--every day for two weeks. This should help reduce the severity of an ongoing attack and prevent further attacks of gout.

Step 3

Continue making healthy lifestyle choices to help reduce the likelihood of another attack. This includes eliminating foods you may be allergic to, avoiding refined foods, drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day and exercising at least half an hour every day, five days a week.

Tips and Warnings

  • You can supplement your cherry juice intake by consuming up to one half lb. of cherries every day for two weeks. Frozen is okay if you don't have access to fresh cherries.
