It's important for the body to maintain a pH balance. pH is measured on a scale of 1 to 14, with low numbers being acidic and high numbers being alkaline. For the most part, your body stays balanced with a pH of about 7.4. A higher pH can indicate a condition called alkalosis. While there are different types of this condition, there are also several treatment options that lower pH levels.
Step 1
Test your body alkalinity with a litmus strip or have a urinalysis test done professionally. A pH above 7.4 is considered alkaline.
Step 2
Determine the cause of your high body pH. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are several types of alkalosis. Respiratory alkalosis is caused by low carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can result from fever or oxygen deprivation. Hypochloremic alkalosis is caused by a lack of chloride, which can occur with a long period of vomiting. Hypokalemic alkalosis is caused by an extreme lack of potassium in the kidneys.
Step 3
Breathe into a paper bag to alleviate respiratory alkalosis. This helps increase oxygen levels in the blood.
Step 4
See a doctor to determine if you need medication to treat hypochloremic or hypokalemic alkalosis. For hypokalemic alkalosis, you can also increase your intake of high-potassium foods such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, avocados, pinto beans, salmon and peanut butter.
