How to Relieve Yeast Infection Symptoms

Vaginal yeast infections can result when the normally harmless yeast-like fungus Candida albicans grows unchecked in the body. This unpleasant condition causes numerous symptoms, including vaginal itching, burning, soreness and discharge. Treatments to kill the yeast and relieve symptoms range from prescription medications to self-care measures. Fortunately, you have many options to accelerate the healing of a yeast infection.

Step 1

Buy over-the-counter medicines to treat symptoms. These medications contain antifungals like miconazole, clotrimazole, tioconazole and butoconazole. If this is your first yeast infection, however, go to the doctor for treatment guidance.

Step 2

Wash the genital area with just warm water; avoid soap. This can trigger irritation and the release of excess discharge. Sitting in a warm bath might also provide symptom relief.

Step 3

Use Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements to relieve symptoms and shorten the duration of the infection. MayoClinic.com notes that studies have shown that taking this supplement orally or as a suppository have demonstrated benefit. However, not all studies demonstrated benefit, and all involved only small numbers of women.

Step 4

Experiment with alternative therapies that might provide benefit. MayoClinic.com notes anecdotal evidence supports the use of boric acid or garlic suppositories -- both have demonstrated antifungal action -- as well as vinegar douches and creams made from tea tree oil. The University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, notes that using a douche made from pau d'arco might also help. Consult with a qualified health care practitioner on how to properly perform douches with these substances.

Step 5

Cut out sugar, alcohol and yeast from your diet. The UMMC notes that studies have shown a link between sugar consumption and yeast infections. While this is seen as more of a preventative measure, it might help with active yeast infections as well.
