Swelling and redness may occur from a number of different things, including rashes, allergic reactions, infections, bug bites and acne. In some cases, this reaction is the result of an immune response to fight off viruses and other foreign substances, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Other times, it may be a skin sensitivity or skin condition like erythema. There are many home remedies to reduce skin redness and swelling.
Tea Tree Oil
According to MayoClinic.com, tea tree oil may reduce redness and swelling from acne and allergic skin reactions, although no scientific evidence exists to prove its effectiveness. Tea tree oil, a solution made from steaming the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree or shrub, may have antiseptic properties. Physicians warn against ingesting tea tree oil, as it may be toxic when swallowed. When applied to the skin, those with sensitivities may find that redness and swelling could worsen.
Sliced Onion
A sliced onion applied to a bee sting may offer some relief. The People's Pharmacy website reports that enzymes in a freshly-sliced onion may help break down compounds in bee venom that cause inflammation.
Tea Bags
Redness and inflammation of the skin around the eyes may be reduced through the use of tea bag compresses to the area. This home remedy works due to tannins contained in black or green tea, according to GrannyMed.com. Tannins, natural astringents, constrict blood vessels and tighten the skin. Some herbal tea bags may also work to soothe redness and irritation. The tea bags should be steeped in hot water for several minutes, then cooled and placed over each eye for 5 to 15 minutes.
