Whether it's a stomach virus with flu-like symptoms or a serious case of H1N1, having a stomach virus can take you out of the game for a few days to a week. Lost wages, time away from family and the awful symptoms make avoiding a stomach virus a priority. By following the right hygiene practices and avoiding those who may have a stomach virus, you can protect yourself and your family from catching a highly contagious, yet completely preventable, sickness.

Step 1

Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, suggests MayoClinic.com. Washing your hands with antibacterial soap throughout the day helps kill the germs that can expedite the spread of a stomach virus. Pay special attention to washing your hands before preparing food, before eating, after using the bathroom, after shaking hands or touching a sick person, and after changing diapers. Keep your hands clean so you don't transfer the germs from your hands into your mouth and catch the virus.

Step 2

Avoid public places when your immune system is at risk. If you have an immune system deficiency, are prone to illness or are pregnant, stay away from areas where a number of people will be in a small space, like churches, shopping malls and airplanes. State and local government sometimes issue warnings about areas where viruses are likely to be prevalent.

Step 3

Bring your own utensils, cups and plates instead of sharing with a friend. When you share drinks with a friend, or eat from the same plate or utensil, you run the risk of catching a stomach virus from an infected person. If you're caring for someone who is ill, make sure to disinfect often and to separate anything that will go into your mouth from his utensils and materials.

Step 4

Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes. When you bite your nails, rub your eyes frequently or wipe your nose, you give a potential stomach virus a way to get into your body.

Step 5

Stay away from those who you know are sick, and from places where illness is common. Hospitals, nursing homes and the homes of friends who may have a stomach virus should be avoided. Keep your distance until a doctor gives the all-clear, especially if you're susceptible to contagious viruses.
