Bitter orange, or citrus aurantium, comes from orange trees. It has aromatherapy, cosmetic, culinary and weight loss uses. Recently, bitter orange extract has been used in place of ephedra in weight loss products. According to the Mayo Clinic, many of the side effects associated with ephedra seem likely to occur with bitter orange. Substantial research has yet to be completed on bitter orange extract as a weight-loss supplement. Consult with your health care provider before taking this product. As with any supplement or diet pill, bitter orange extract has the potential for side effects.
Cardiovascular Effects
According to Personal Health Zone, bitter orange has been associated with adverse cardiovascular reactions. These reactions can include heartbeat irregularities and increased blood pressure. Individuals with existing cardiovascular, heart and blood pressure conditions should not take bitter orange. Bitter orange can cause the symptoms of your ailment to be intensified. For example, individuals with high blood pressure may experience a spike in pressure as a result of bitter orange. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), bitter orange contains synephrine, like ephedra. Ephedra was banned by the Food and Drug Administration because it was linked to heart attacks. While research has not linked bitter orange to these same severe consequences, so far, consumers should be cautious.
Drug Interaction and Complications
Some medications may be intensified or altered as the result of an interaction with bitter orange. According to the Mayo Clinic, bitter orange may slow the metabolism of many drugs. When the body fails to process medications properly, a build up of the substance can be created. This could lead to an overdose or other adverse reactions depending upon the medication. Individuals taking medications like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), should avoid bitter orange extract. MAOIs already speed the heart rate and further increasing it with bitter orange extract could lead to serious complications, including a stroke or even death.
Undiscovered Side Effects
Because bitter orange extract has only made an appearance as a weight-loss supplement, additional side effects have yet to be discovered. The connection between ephedra and bitter orange extract suggests that many other side effects are possible. These may include slowed digestion, irritability, headache, dizziness and weakness. These additional side effects may occur because of the increase in heart rate and appetite suppression. Contact a medical professional if you experience any side effects that are or are not listed on the label as they may be an indication of something more serious.
