The formation of wrinkles on the face are part of the normal aging process. The American Academy of Dermatology distinguishes two different types of aging. The first type of aging is known as intrinsic aging and is determined by the genes we inherit. Extrinsic aging is "caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to the sun's rays." There are numerous environmental factors that contribute to the formation of permanent facial wrinkles.
Sun Exposure
The most common cause of premature aging and wrinkling of the skin on the face can be attributed to sun exposure. While the sun's UVB rays are the culprit behind sunburn, UVA rays are responsible for wrinkling the skin. These harmful UVA rays "penetrate deep into the dermis, where they damage the collagen fibers," states The Skin Cancer Foundation. The deterioration of collagen in the dermis often results in wrinkly, leathery skin and age spots.
Repetitive Facial Expressions
Facial wrinkles are also caused by repeating the same facial expressions over an extended period of time. The Mayo Clinic explains, "each time you use a facial muscle, a groove forms beneath the surface of the skin." The skin loses its elasticity during the natural aging process and wrinkles form because it is no longer able to return to its previous smooth condition.
Smoking
Smoking cigarettes is a known contributing factor to skin wrinkling. Many of the chemicals in cigarettes damage the skin's collagen and elasticity, causing the skin to dry out and sag. Additionally, many smokers repeat certain facial expressions while they are smoking. The constant pursing of lips during inhalation often causes wrinkles to develop around the mouth.
