Murphy, Georgia, is an unincorporated area of Colquitt County just southwest of Moultrie, Georgia, the county seat. The heavily forested region is mainly used for agriculture. Outdoor recreation is favored by many visitors and residents. Numerous lakes, rivers and streams provide plenty of fishing, hunting and water sports. Tracts of forest are broken by pecan groves and waterways.

Campgrounds

Creekside RV Park and Campground offers campsites to outdoor motor enthusiasts. Its campsites offer Internet and bathroom facilities. Visitors can also enjoy hiking trails and a lake.

Reed Brigham State Park is a 375-acre state park managed by the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The park has both recreational vehicle and tent campsites that you can enjoy. Other amenities at the park include a swimming beach, a playground and a fishing pier.

The Tifton KOA is located in Tifton, Georgia. This campground is located northeast of Murphy, but in easy driving distance of less than an hour. The Tifton KOA has a bathhouse, a nature trail, fishing, laundry and a banquet hall available for large parties.

Kid Fun

Reed Brigham State Park hosts an outing for children called "Junior Ranger Saturday." Kids can come to the park and enjoy a few hours on nature hikes with park rangers. Kids also will enjoy the fishing and hunting in the area.

Precautions

Take heat precautions during the summer months because the average temperature during the June-September period averages in the 90s Fahrenheit with high humidity. Drink plenty of fluids when performing activities outside, and if you feel dizzy or nauseous, seek shelter, drink water or a sports performance drink. If the problem persists, seek medical attention.

Geography

The area around Murphy is part of the Upper Coastal Plain and is dominated by farming. Good water sources also exist and come mainly from groundwater. The area is heavily forested with low hills.

History

Settled around 1856 the area was once known for supplying 70 percent of the world's naval stores. Naval stores were the elements (pitch, tar and turpentine) used in shipbuilding and ship-keeping.

In nearby Albany, Georgia, there is the Albany African Americans Civil Rights Museum honoring those persons who worked to achieve equal rights for all people.

Visitors can also tour the Kolomoki Mounds State Historical Park, the oldest and largest Woodland Indian site in the southeastern United States, occupied by American Indians from 350 to 750 A.D.
