The Side Effects of Cymbalta

Cymbalta, or duloxetine hydrochloride, is a drug used to treat certain medical conditions. These conditions include depression, GAD or generalized anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy. The drug targets the chemicals in the brain including serotonin and norepinephrine. There are several possible side effects related to taking Cymbalta. These should be discussed with your physician before taking or stopping the medication.

Gastrointestinal

In some people, the gastrointestinal tract is affected by taking Cymbalta. Some of these symptoms and side effects include pain in the abdomen, irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn, changes in taste, weight loss or gain, nausea, vomiting, loss of hunger and constipation.

General Malaise

General malaise means an overall feeling of achiness, discomfort or uneasiness with the body. Many people associate malaise with having the flu or a bad cold. Some side effects of Cymbalta can feel quite similar. These include; fatigue, dry mouth, weakness, sweating, muscle pain, frequent urination, hot flashes, frequent yawning and chills.

Respiratory

The respiratory system is composed of the lungs, heart, diaphragm and bronchial tract. Cymbalta can affect how the respiratory system operates and functions. Respiratory side effects include pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs), increased heart rate, upper respiratory tract infection, chronic cough, congestion, sore throat and a runny nose.

Neurological

Neurological side effects of Cymbalta can come about suddenly or happen over time. Many patients don't always recall some of their behavioral changes resulting from Cymbalta use, while others seek medical treatment immediately. Some of these symptoms may be overactive reflexes, agitation, feeling shaky, mental confusion, depression, elation, unusual changes in behavior, hostility, panic attacks, increased anxiety, restlessness, headache, vertigo or dizziness, blurry vision, muscle spasms and abnormal dreaming or acting out.

Sexual Side Effects

Some people who regularly take Cymbalta may find that their sex life has changed since starting the antidepressant. These side effects may include trouble achieving ejaculation or being unable to ejaculate, impotence, erectile dysfunctions, a decrease or lack of sex drive and inability to reach an orgasm. These side effects should be discussed with your doctor, who may be able to prescribe additional medication, alter your dosage or change the prescription.
