Byetta Side Effects for Men

Byetta is an injectable prescription medication that contains the active ingredient exenatide. This medication, when used in conjunction with metformin or a thiazolidine medication, is indicated for people with type 2 diabetes, as Byetta stabilizes insulin levels. The side effects of Byetta for men typically mimic those experienced by women taking this medication.

Low Blood Sugar

One of the most common side effects associated with Byetta is low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. In clinical trials for this medication, approximately 5 percent of men and women who received treated with 5 mcg Byetta alone twice each day experienced low blood sugar as an adverse side effect, according to Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Eli Lily and Company, the pharmaceutical distributors of this medication. Side effects of hypoglycemia may include dizziness, headache, mood changes, weakness, pale skin, constant hunger, shaking or jerky movements, nervousness, oral numbness or tingling and excessive sweating. Men who exhibit any of these side effects while taking Byetta should consult a medical professional as soon as possible. Left untreated, low blood sugar may cause more serious medical complications, such as seizures or loss of consciousness.

Upset Stomach

Men receiving treatment with Byetta may experience upset stomach side effects. An estimated 8 percent of patients developed nausea while taking this medication alone during clinical trials, according to RxList. Additional gastrointestinal complications may include vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, diminished appetite or weight loss. If these side effects persist or become severe, affected men should seek care from a physician.

Kidney Complications

In November 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a notice to healthcare professionals that announced revisions to Byetta prescribing information that addressed potential kidney complications. Men should be aware than treatment with this medication may cause poor kidney function or kidney failure, PubMed Health warns. The risk of developing kidney complications may be highest in men with pre-existing kidney problems. Men who experience urination problems, excessive fatigue, unusual swelling or severe stomach upset while taking Byetta should contact a medical professional as soon as possible.
