Testosterone is a male hormone needed by both men and women. In high levels, though, testosterone can be undesirable. In men, high testosterone can lead to intense sexual desire and increased aggression. Many women with high testosterone levels are at a greater risk of developing male features such as facial hair. Hirsuitism, a development in which excessive hair growth occurs on a female's face, is often related to high testosterone levels. If you are looking to lower your testosterone's influence on your body, there are several things you can do to lower these levels while also improving the presence of other hormones in the body.
Step 1
Exercise frequently. Exercise uses up your body's testosterone levels, which can result in a short-term drop in your body's testosterone. Your exercises should be geared toward burning calories and working out the body without building large amounts of muscle--muscle needs testosterone, and as you build muscle mass, you will be increasing the amount of testosterone your body needs to produce.
Step 2
Increase the role of soy products in your diet, if you are a woman. High testosterone levels can be offset by the consumption of plant materials containing isoflavones--estrogen-like hormones that act similar to estrogen when in the body. This doesn't lower the finite number of your body's testosterone count, but it improves the ratio of testosterone to estrogen and estrogen-like hormones, which can reduce the influence of testosterone on your body.
Step 3
Have sex. Particularly for men, sexual activity and orgasms can cause a quick drop-off in the body's testosterone levels. While it is important to keep the role of sex in your life in balance, some men prefer to use sex as a means of lowering testosterone levels. This can diminish the foothold the male hormone has on them--at least temporarily--allowing them to act and think without the urges of the hormone present. Additionally, high testosterone levels typically increase the desire for sex, and having sex can help relieve this urge.
Step 4
Consider getting married, if you are a man. According to the Harvard Gazette, married men tend to have lower testosterone levels than unmarried men, regardless of whether they have children or not. This is likely due to the eliminated biological need to mate--testosterone increases male desire toward females, but married men have little use for this application.
