Diagnosis & Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an almost always incurable cancer that affects the mesothelium, the membrane that protects and lines many vital organs in the body. This cancer is caused primarily by exposure to asbestos.

Time Frame

According to the National Cancer Institute, the symptoms of mesothelioma may not manifest until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Common Symptoms

The most common symptoms of mesothelioma include chest pain and shortness of breath. Abdominal pain or testicular pain may occur if the mesothelioma affects the abdominal cavity or testicles.

Other Symptoms

Some other common symptoms of mesothelioma include bowel obstructions, fever, abnormal blood clotting, anemia, abdominal pain, weight loss and fever. If the mesothelioma spreads past the mesothelium, generalized pain, facial and neck swelling, and difficulty breathing may occur.

Risk Factors

People who are at an increased risk of mesothelioma include those who have been exposed to asbestos---especially smokers who were exposed, family members of people exposed to asbestos, males and people exposed to radiation for prolonged periods of time.

Diagnosis

When diagnosing mesothelioma, an in-depth medical history that includes an asbestos exposure form is required. Additionally, a physician may order x-rays, lung function tests, MRI, CT scan and/or a biopsy. In some cases, a thoracoscopy may be necessary.
