Side Effects of Simvastatin Vytorin

Vytorin is a combination statin and cholesterol absorption inhibitor, and according to the Mayo Clinic, one of the main ingredients is simvastatin. Taken alone, simvastatin is lipid-lowering agent (Zocor); in the prescription Vytorin simvastatin is combined with the drug ezetimibe (Zetia when prescribed alone) to achieve a higher level of cholesterol control. While Vytorin has been approved by the FDA and has been shown to be effective in fighting high cholesterol, it is important that you are aware of possible side effects.

Common Side Effects

Nausea, headache and flu-like symptoms are common side effects of Vytorin with simvastatin. Other side effects include tiredness, pain in the legs or arms, and upper respiratory infections; according to PDR Health this medication may cause change in vision or drowsiness, so you should not drive until you know how Vytorin will affect you.

Side Effects Requiring Medical Attention

Vytorin may cause joint pain, hives, muscle pain and swelling in the throat, tongue, lips or face. If any of these symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately as she may recommend that you stop taking Vytorin simvastatin immediately. This medication is known to cause a condition called rhabdomyolysis, and it is important that you seek medical attention if you experience tenderness, pain or weakness in your muscles, especially if you also have a fever.

Serious Side Effects

Taking Vytorin may cause liver damage, especially if you imbibe more than two alcoholic drinks per day. Drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit can increase the effects of Vytorin and raise your risk of side effects. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or may become pregnant should not take this medication; nor should anyone with liver problems or active liver disease.
