AndroGel can be prescribed by a doctor when a man's body does not produce enough testosterone. This condition is called hypogonadism. AndroGel is administered topically on a patch of skin on the shoulders, chest or upper arms.
Acne
One of the most frequent side effects that occur after using AndroGel is acne on the spot where the medication is applied. When AndroGel is applied in 5-, 7.5- or 10- gram doses, moderate to severe acne occurs in approximately 8 percent of the users according to tests administered by manufacturers and recorded by the Food & Drug Administration.
Prostate Problems
Prostate problems developed in 5 percent of AndroGel users who took doses of 5, 7.5 or 10 grams. An enlarged prostate was the most frequent problem among those who had a reaction in this area of the body. Other problems included benign prostatic hyperplasia and an elevated prostate specific antigen.
Emotional Problems
Those who use AndroGel in 5-, 7.5- or 10-gram doses may bring emotional problems and issues to the surface. Approximately 3 percent of the users tested said they had become far more emotionally evocative than they were before they used AndroGel. This resulted in long periods of self-discovery and crying jags.
