Side Effects of Effexor XP

Effexor XR is an extended-release prescription medication that contains venlafaxine hydrochloride. This medication is primarily indicated to treat patients who have certain types of mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. Since it is formulated as an extended release capsule, it can be taken once per day, or as prescribed by a doctor, Effexor XR can help control symptoms associated with depression or anxiety by altering the levels of mood-related chemicals within the brain. Patients should be aware of the side effects of Effexor XR before beginning treatment with this medication.

Upset Stomach

The most common side effect associated with Effexor XR is nausea. In clinical trials for this medication, 20 percent, 35 percent and 31 percent of patients with depression, general anxiety or social anxiety, respectively, experienced nausea, according to RxList.com. Additional upset stomach side effects may include vomiting, diminished appetite and constipation. Patients with constipation may also develop abdominal bloating, gas or cramping, which can exacerbate nausea or appetite loss. In conjunction, these side effects may lead to weight loss in certain patients.

Dizziness, Vision Changes or Confusion

Patients receiving treatment with Effexor XR may experience unusual vision changes or dizziness as side effects, PDRhealth reports. Blurred or cloudy vision may lead to dizziness, which may cause patients to appear confused or disoriented while sitting, standing or walking. If these side effects become severe or persistent, affected patients should seek prompt medical care.

Sleeping Difficulties

While receiving treatment with this medication, patients may experience insomnia, or difficulty falling or staying asleep, as a side effect. Alternatively, certain patients may experience increased fatigue or sleepiness after taking a dose of Effexor XR. These side effects may limit a patient's ability to remain alert, active or attentive during normal daily activities, such as work or school.

Sexual Changes

Men and women who take this medication may develop unusual sexual changes as a side effect of treatment. Male patients may have difficulty achieving or sustaining an erection when engaged in sexual activities, a side effect referred to as impotence. Certain men and women may also have difficulty attaining orgasm, Drugs.com warns. If these side effects are bothersome, affected patients should consult a doctor for further evaluation and care.
