Muscle aches and pains are not only a common occurrence among athletes, but also for those who sit for long periods of time or who cannot move their bodies often throughout the day. These pains may also stem from a dietary deficiency. To lessen pain, several foods rich in anti-inflammatory properties can be consumed, including tart cherries, rose hip tea and foods high in magnesium.

Consult a physician when you experience extended bouts of muscle pain.

Tart Cherries

Tart cherries may help to ease muscle aches and pains. In his book "101 Optimal Life Foods," David Grotto references a study where college students who drank twelve ounces twice a day of a cherry juice blend had significantly reduced muscle pain after exercise. The study seemed to indicate that cherry juice has an anti-inflammatory effect similar to some over-the-counter medications.

Rose Hip Tea

Rose hip tea is another natural source that can calm muscle pain. Rose hips are high in vitamin C and flavonoids, which are both antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. According to Grotto, the flavonoids found in rose hips, such as anthocyanins, have natural anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce lower-back pain.

Rose hip tea should optimally be consumed in small doses throughout the day. There are no known contraindications for rose hips.

Magnesium

Muscle aches and pains can also be caused by a deficiency of magnesium, which is a natural muscle relaxant. Although magnesium may be taken in supplemental form, high amounts are found in leafy green vegetables. According to "Prescription for Natural Cures" by James Balch, along with leafy greens, those suffering from low levels of magnesium should also consume whole grains, nuts, legumes and soy products.
