Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. It is performed on a mat or using bands, rings or a Reformer. The Reformer uses straps, springs and and supports based on the original models that Joseph Pilates designed for exercise and rehabilitation. Pilates uses controlled movements to work the abdominals, back, neck and legs. Doing Pilates regularly is said to increase strength and flexibility and improve posture. Most individuals can perform Pilates at home on a mat, and they might want to use Pilates DVDs for beginners to help. Consult your physician before starting a new exercise program.
