How to Treat Rashes from the Side Effects of Lactobacillus

Lactobacilli are naturally occurring bacteria that live within the small intestine and vagina. Lactobacilli that occur naturally are considered healthy bacteria. Lactobacillus products can be taken as a supplement to promote healthy digestion and to treat bacterial vaginosis, an overgrowth of naturally occurring bacteria such as yeast. Lactobacillus can be used vaginally via a suppository. Special yogurt products are made with lactobacillus acidophilus that is thought to promote a healthy balance of bacteria as well. There may be a risk of side effects when taking lactobacillus products or consuming commercial yogurt products containing the bacteria. A rash may be one indication of a sensitivity or allergy to the bacteria.

Step 1

If you notice a rash on your skin, discontinue any lactobacillus product you are consuming. Even though lactobacillus is thought to be tolerable by lactose-intolerant or lactose-sensitive individuals, it may cause a rash. The rash could be the result of some other sensitivity to the bacteria.

Step 2

If the rash is itching, apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream or anti-itch cream to the rash. Wash the medication from your hands after the application. This cream should begin to work shortly after it comes in contact with the rash. Depending upon the severity of the rash, you may notice a decrease in redness and inflammation.

Step 3

Take one dose of antihistamine with a glass of water. According to MedicineNet.com, if the rash is due to an allergic response to the lactobacillus, then the antihistamine will block the histamines that are responding to the bacteria by causing cell irritation.

Step 4

Follow the directions for the specific creams and antihistamines that were purchased. Repeat the process if necessary and only as often as directed. If the rash does not get better after 24 hours or seems to worsen, contact your health care provider.

Tips and Warnings

  • A rash that is warm to the touch or extremely painful may benefit from a cool wash cloth or an ice pack wrapped with a towel.
  • Do not wait to seek medical attention if the rash spreads across a substantial portion of your body. Seek medical care immediately if the rash is accompanied by any other symptoms, especially wheezing or breathing difficulties. This can be a sign of a serious allergic reaction.
