Whether you have a full head of hair or are bald by nature or by choice, a healthy scalp helps you look your best. Proper scalp care can be a challenge, because the scalp is prone to dandruff or itching and flaking caused by dry skin; acne and blemishes caused by oily skin; or damage caused by exposure to sun. See your physician if simple home treatments don't improve the condition of your scalp.
Step 1
Improve circulation to your scalp with a two- to three-minute scalp massage. Use the padded parts of your fingers to massage in small circles. Massage your entire scalp or problem areas. Repeat as often as you like. For a more intense massage, warm a small bowl of oil such as olive oil, sweet almond oil or coconut oil. Massage the warm oil into your scalp, then wash your hair as usual.
Step 2
Take warm showers and avoid hot water, which will dehydrate and irritate your scalp. Use a mild shampoo suitable for your skin type. Avoid alkaline shampoos because human hair and skin are naturally acidic, according to Health Services at Oregon State University. Read the label, and buy shampoos that are pH balanced.
Step 3
Eat a healthy diet with a variety of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins C and B, which promote scalp health, according to Oregon State University Student Health Services. Increase your consumption of water.
Step 4
Improve the pH balance of your scalp with a vinegar treatment. Mix 6 tablespoons water and 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. Massage the mixture into your scalp before bed. Wrap your head with a large towel or a shower cap, and leave the vinegar mixture in your hair overnight. Shampoo your hair in the morning, then follow with a vinegar and water rinse.
Step 5
Wear a scarf or a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella to protect your scalp from the sun and wind, according to the Baylor College of Medicine. A full head of hair isn't a guarantee that your scalp is protected from damaging rays that can cause skin cancer. Use a sunscreen on any bald areas.
