Cyclobenzaprine, marketed under the brand names Flexeril and Amrix, relaxes muscles. The medication relieves muscle spasms without impeding the use of the muscle. Acute muscular injuries react best to cyclobenzaprine. Used for short periods, along with rest and therapy, the medicine relieves pain and helps increase range of motion for the affected muscle.
Uses
Cyclobenzaprine treats muscle spasms due to painful muscular conditions, such as a sprain or pulled muscle. The medication works in the brain and nervous system to reduce the spasms and relax the muscles. In conjunction with rest and physical therapy, cyclobenzaprine helps relieve muscle pain and stiffness.
Availability
A prescription by a physician is the only way to obtain cyclobenzaprine. The medication is available as a regular tablet or as an extended release capsule. Immediate release Flexeril dosage includes 5 mg and 10 mg tablets. Extended release Amrix has dosages of 15 mg and 30 mg available.
Administration
Along with physical therapy, take cyclobenzaprine by mouth as directed by a physician. Take Amrix daily and take Flexeril three times daily. Because a muscular condition requiring cyclobenzaprine is an acute, short-term condition, use the medication for short durations. Do not chew, crush or open the extended-release capsules. The maximum recommended time to use cyclobenzaprine is two to three weeks. Store cyclobenzaprine at room temperature and away from light.
Side Effects
Cyclobenzaprine may cause drowsiness or sleepiness. Use caution when operating heavy machinery or driving until fully aware of all of the possible side effects. In addition to drowsiness, the most common side effects include nausea, blurred vision, an unpleasant taste in the mouth, constipation, dizziness and dry mouth. Discontinue the use of the medication immediately and seek emergency medical attention for any signs of an allergic reaction to cyclobenzaprine. These symptoms include, but are not limited to, swelling of the airway, difficulty breathing and hives.
Considerations
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking cyclobenzaprine. Use the medication with caution if pregnant or nursing. Avoid using cyclobenzaprine if already taking an MAO inhibitor or stopped within the previous two weeks. Individuals suffering from heart conditions, such as congestive heart failure or an irregular heart rate, should not take cyclobenzaprine. Additional medical conditions, like an overactive thyroid, are not compatible with the use of cyclobenzaprine. This does not include all possible considerations or drug interactions, so proper consultation with a physician is important before beginning the medication.
Overdose
Watch for signs of a cyclobenzaprine overdose. Some symptoms of an overdose include stupor, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, stiff muscles and a coma. Stop the medication immediately and seek emergency medical attention.
