Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are small benign growths that frequently form on the eyelid; however, these unsightly balls of flesh can also be found on other areas of the body as well. Although skin tags are generally harmless and not painful, large acrochordons may burst under pressure from constant rubbing or scratching. According to "Medical News Today," skin tags can appear on anyone, including children, but are typically found in adults over the age of 50. Skin tags typically do not disappear without treatment, but they can be safely removed by a medical professional.
Obesity
Being overweight can cause a host of skin-related problems. Skin tags have been linked to some obese patients' higher-than-normal glucose levels. According to a study conducted in 1995 by the "Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology," candidates who were obese showed a high number of skin tags around the eyelids, under the arm, and on the neck. Individuals who are overweight may develop skin tags due to the eyelid rubbing against the brow line. The same study concluded that there is a correlation between high glucose levels, obesity and skin tags.
Pregnancy
In pregnant women, skin tags can be caused by various reasons, including stress and changes in hormone levels. Although frequently seen on the eyelids, skin tags are also common among pregnant women in areas where the skin rubs against tight clothing, such as under the bra or under the arm. According to Pregnancy.org, skin tags are common among pregnant women and may disappear after giving birth. However, if they don't, a dermatologist can safely remove them using medical procedures such as freezing, surgical cutting or burning.
Diabetes
Skin tags are common in individuals with diabetes for reasons similar to those in obese people. A high level of glucose in the blood may trigger skin tag growth. Skin tags that develop on the eyelid usually match the color of skin; however, some may be darker. According to Medline Plus, excessive rubbing or touching may easily agitate skin tags.
