An itchy scalp has a variety of causes, and it should prompt a visit to the dermatologist if basic self-care steps at home fail to remedy the condition. Dandruff is a common cause of an itchy scalp, but a fungal infection, psoriasis, ringworm or allergic reactions to hair products are other possible causes.
Eliminate Irritants
Sometimes an itchy scalp results simply from ongoing irritation of the skin. Hair styling products, including sprays, gels, mousse and waxes, are common culprits, according to MayoClinic.com. Stop using these products to see whether the itchy scalp goes away. The dyes and perfumes added to many shampoos and conditioners can cause an itchy scalp as well, so try dye- and fragrance-free products to see whether there's improvement. Rinse hair cleansers and conditioners out thoroughly, and never use bar soap on the scalp. Scratching itchy skin irritates the condition, too. Wearing gloves at night can prevent damaging scratching during sleep.
Scalp Applications
A cool, wet compress, such as a washcloth soaked in cool water, can provide relief from an itchy scalp, according to Columbia University. Massaging warm olive oil into the scalp and leaving it there for about 10 minutes before a shower can help, too, says Dr. Robert Rietschel of the Department of Dermatology at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. Rietschel also recommends applying an over-the-counter 1 percent hydrocortisone cream to the scalp, especially for eczema or psoriasis-related itching.
Dandruff Shampoo
Scalp itching associated with dandruff can usually be remedied with over-the-counter shampoos formulated for treating the condition. Products made with zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole or tar can help, states MayoClinic.com. Shampoos made from coal-tar are a good choice for those whose itching stems from psoriasis-induced inflammation, notes Rietschel. Shampoos made with tea tree oil may provide some relief from dandruff and itching as well, according to MayoClinic.com. Shampoo every day to help control dandruff.
Bath Additives
Soaking the scalp in a bath with certain additives can relieve dryness and itchiness. Try adding a few sprinkles of raw oatmeal, colloidal oatmeal or baking soda to the water.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines generally contain anti-itching ingredients that can help alleviate an itchy scalp, according to Robert Richards, M.D., of the American Academy of Dermatology. Antihistamines can cause drowsiness, so they may be useful for scalp itching that disturbs sleep.
