When you think of algae, you might not automatically think of it as something good to put into your body. However, two types of blue green algae, spirulina and chlorella, have abundant natural health benefits. They are available in various supplement forms, including powders, capsules, tablets and tinctures. You can maximize the different benefits of spirulina and chlorella by taking them together, reports iHealth directory. While these supplements may prevent various conditions, they are not medical treatments.

Spirulina Diabetes Benefits

Spirulina may prevent diabetes symptoms. HealthyFellow.com cites a study conducted on rats at Pondicherry University in Kalapet, India. The study, led by P. Muthuraman, found that 30 days of supplementation with spirulina yielded positive changes in blood glucose, insulin production, body weight and pancreatic health. These findings would need to be confirmed in large human studies; spirulina is not considered a medical treatment for diabetes.

Chlorella and Cancer

Although neither spirulina nor chlorella are considered medical treatments for cancer, iHealth Directory reports that chlorella is sometimes given as a supplement to cancer patients or those at risk for cancer. Chlorella is abundant in antioxidants, which are powerful combatants of free radicals. According to iHealth Directory, chlorella may have potential to slow the growth of cancer cells in some cases. You should consult your doctor before taking chlorella for this purpose.

Spirulina's Fitness Benefits

For those looking to lose weight or increase muscle mass, spirulina may provide some benefit. According to iHealth Directory, spirulina has the ability to facilitate better digestion and reduce absorption of fat. In addition, blue algae is thought to enhance thyroid function. HealthyFellow.com reports that spirulina may also improve athletic performance by increasing fat burning potential and decreasing oxidative stress. Further research is needed to confirm these claims, however.

Chlorella and Pregnancy

Chlorella is rich in natural folic acid, which is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy, reports HealthyFellow.com. It also contains B12 and iron, which may benefit pregnant women. A study conducted at Saisekei Nara Hospital in Japan that suggested chlorella supplementation may reduce the risk of anemia in pregnant women. The study, led by Shiro Nakamo, was published in the journal "Chemistry and Materials Science." Although supplementing with folic acid is commonly recommended for pregnant women, consult your doctor before taking chlorella while pregnant.
