Magnesium stearate is a chemical substance used in many medications and supplements as a filler; it helps to keep capsule ingredients from clumping together. You may find information online that claims this substance, when used in medications, is harmful. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet for magnesium stearate, provided by ScienceLab.com, it actually is hazardous if ingested; however, no cases of toxicity through supplement use have been reported, according to Ray Sahelian, M.D. If you prefer to eliminate magnesium stearate, some supplement companies formulate their products without it.

New Chapter Organics

New Chapter Organics is a company dedicated to creating organic, whole-food supplements with minimal impact on the environment. The company formulates its products, which range from multivitamins to cardiovascular support formulas, without chemically-derived vitamins or minerals and without chemical binding or filling ingredients. For instance, its Every Woman's One Daily multivitamin is completely chemical-free, according to its ingredient list. In addition to being magnesium stearate-free, the supplements were not extracted using high heat or chemicals like hexane, which is found in paint. The company website states that it extracts nutrients from the whole herb in a process called "supercritical extraction."

Nature's Way

Nature's Way is another company that utilizes organic nutrients for its supplements. Nature's Way provides over 500 products, including multivitamins, cold remedies, essential fatty acids, probiotics and even topical solutions. They are organically-based, containing no chemicals or fillers. The capsules and ingredients are all vegetable derived.

Kroeger Herb

This company has been in business since 1978 and bases its philosophy on the teachings of herbalist Hanna Kroeger, who began dispensing herbs in the 1950s. The company offers education on its website, aiding in your understanding of the herbal remedies you are seeking. Although Kroeger Herb does not have multivitamins like the aforementioned companies, they offer tinctures, supplements and teas that are designed to provide specific nutrients, such as vitamins A and E and zinc, without chemical additives.

Hero Nutritionals

If you are concerned about additives and fillers in capsules, consider trying a gummy. At Hero Nutritionals, they even make them for adults. Some multivitamins are quite large and difficult to swallow; these gummy vitamins are an excellent alternative. All of the company's gummy vitamins, from multis to specific vitamins like D3, are formulated gluten-, casein- and allergen-free. They also contain no preservatives or artificial colors or flavors. Gummy vitamins may also be easier to digest and absorb, as chewing and saliva aids in the breakdown of compounds.
