Celebrex & Vioxx Side Effects

Celebrex is the brand name of the generic drug celecoxib. Vioxx is the brand name of the generic durg rofecoxib. Both of these drugs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS. Vioxx was taken off of the market in 2004 due to severe side effects. Vioxx was and Celebrex is used for the relief of pain stemming from arthritis, surgical procedures and menstrual cramping. It is important to be aware of potential side effects when taking prescription medications.

Vioxx

Vioxx was taken off the market because there was concern that it caused heart problems in people taking it. According to the Pharmacy Benefits Management Medical Advisory Panel, patients taking Vioxx had a higher incidence of stroke and heart attack than those taking a placebo.
Vioxx caused non-heart-related side effects as well, including coughing, fever, sore throat and gastrointestinal problems. These included bloody or tarry stools, heartburn, a burning feeling in the stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Headache, dizziness, loss of energy and stuffy nose were also common side effects.

Celebrex - Severe Side Effects

Celebrex has the potential to cause severe or serious side effects that warrant a prompt call to a health care professional. Some of these include cough, fever, rash, sore throat and swelling of the extremities. Heavy bleeding, including non-menstrual vaginal bleeding, and any severe or stabbing pain should be reported immediately. Less common serious side effects that may indicate a problem with the cardiovascular system are chest pain, chest tightness, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, weakness and wheezing. Serious side effects relating to the digestive system are cramping, diarrhea, severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, blood in the stools and stomach tenderness.

Celebrex - Mild Side Effects

Some side effects may occur with Celebrex that are mild and normally go away as you adjust to taking the medication. These should be reported to your doctor if they are bothersome or if they do not go away shortly. They include heartburn, nausea, dizziness, gas, and back pain. Less common mild side effects associated with Celebrex are constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth, depression, itching, nervousness and fatigue.
