Social anxiety disorder is often debilitating and can prevent you from living life to its fullest. Helpguide says symptoms of social anxiety include irritability, inability to focus, insomnia, headaches, sweating and increased heart rate. There are a variety of herbs that may be used to aid in alleviating the symptoms of social anxiety. Consult with a physician or mental health care professional before beginning an herbal regimen for the treatment of social anxiety. Herbal remedies should not be used to replace any current medications without supervision of a health care professional.
Valerian
Valerian root may ease anxiety, nervousness, headaches and insomnia, writes Michael Castleman author of "The Healing Herbs." Valerian is reputed to be a powerful sedative and may be a non-addictive alternative to prescription and over-the-counter sleep aids. Valerian is generally considered to be a safe herb; however, it should not be used if you are pregnant, nursing or taking sedatives or tranquilizers. Possible side effects include blurred vision, nausea, headache, restlessness and giddiness. If you experience side effects, discontinue use and contact your doctor. Consult with a health care professional before using valerian to treat anxiety or insomnia.
Kava Kava
Kava kava may help prevent anxiety and panic attacks and promote a more relaxed state of mind, according to Dr. James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Kava kava is also reputed to aid in alleviating insomnia and the symptoms of depression. Consult with a physician before using kava kava to treat social anxiety or any other disorder. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, kava kava may cause liver damage, and although it is still available in the United States, it has been banned in some countries. Discontinue use of kava kava and seek medical help immediately if you experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, joint pain or yellowing of the skin, all of which may be signs of liver damage. Other side effects include restlessness, drowsiness, upset stomach, dizziness and hair loss. Abstain from alcohol use while taking kava kava.
Passionflower
Passionflower has a sedative and tranquilizing effect that may help calm the nerves and reduce anxiety, writes Castleman. It can also be used to ease the symptoms of stress and to alleviate insomnia. There are few known side effects associated with passionflower. Do not use passionflower if you are pregnant, as it is believed to stimulate uterine contractions, which could potentially lead to premature birth or miscarriage. Do not use passionflower is you are currently taking sedatives, tranquilizers or are nursing. Consult with a health care professional before using passionflower to treat social anxiety.
