How to Alleviate Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a mental illness that needs treatment. Depression can make you feel physically ill, and affect your work and relationships. Though many people need medical treatment for their symptoms of depression, there are also plenty of things that you can do to take control of your mental health and help conquer depression. A combination approach of lifestyle changes, stress management, therapy and medications may offer better relief of symptoms of depression.

Step 1

Get professional help. If you notice symptoms of depression--persistent sadness, crying, lack of interest and more--it is best to talk to a doctor first thing. Whether it is your primary care physician, psychiatrist or psychologist, a medical professional can evaluate your symptoms and direct you toward the best treatment options.

Step 2

Consider therapy. Speaking with a counselor or therapist can help you evaluate what is causing your depression and find a way to deal with it. Talking about your emotions, fears, concerns and anxieties can help you feel better and help alleviate symptoms of depression.

Step 3

Try antidepressant medications. Some people need medications to help manage their depression and get relief from symptoms. Talk to your doctor or psychiatrist about antidepressant medications and if they are appropriate for you--just remember that they should be taken in conjunction with other treatments for depression.

Step 4

Reduce stress. If you are stressed out, symptoms of depression will only get worse. Realize that you can't accomplish everything, and that that is OK--try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Try relaxation techniques, like envisioning peaceful images and progressive muscle relaxation. Meditation and yoga can also help to manage stress and symptoms of depression.

Step 5

Exercise. Exercise is a great way to naturally boost your mood and manage symptoms of depression. Exercise helps to alleviate stress and reduce symptoms of depression by releasing chemicals that improve your mood. Play a game or sport, take a walk or go for a bike ride or hike.

Step 6

Have some fun. Give yourself a break and something to look forward to. Laugh with a friend, watch a funny movie, go shopping or participate in one of your favorite activities. Take a little time for yourself each day to relax, laugh, smile and be happy--try to find something good in every day.
