Eczema, also referred to as atopic dermatitis, is a condition that results in an itchy inflammation on the skin. Eczema on the scalp is simple to treat, but may require patience as it can take some time for conditions to improve. Alternative treatments should never replace conventional treatment.

Witch Hazel

A 2005 issue of "Natural Health" magazine says that witch hazel may be used to help treat eczema on the scalp. According to Drugs.com, witch hazel contains hemostatic and astringent properties, making it a beneficial treatment for eczema as it may assist in reducing the inflammation on the scalp. The magazine recommends taking a pad or cotton ball, soaking it in witch hazel and applying it to the affected area on the scalp at least two times per week.

Humidifier

The MayoClinic.com states that a humidifier may be useful in treating eczema. Indoor air that is dry can result in irritating the skin, leading to itching. Portable humidifiers can be moved throughout a home. Installing a whole-house humidifier is also a good idea.

Oatmeal

MotherNature.com says that using a combination of oatmeal and water will be effective in treating eczema on the scalp. Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water and mix in about 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal, which can be purchased in stores and pharmacies. Colloidal oatmeal is oatmeal that is reduced to a fine powder. Soak an old cloth or pad into the mixture, then apply it to the area on the scalp that is affected. Remember to pull back the hair to get right onto the scalp.
