1. Antifungal Creams
One effective way to treat ringworm is to purchase an over-the-counter antifungal cream that contains clotrimazole, generally found under the brand names Lotrimin or Mycelex. The ointment is then applied to the affected area two times per day. Just be aware that an improvement of symptoms may not be seen immediately. The cream can take up to 2 weeks to take effect. Side effects may include stinging or irritation at the lesion site where the ointment is applied. If you don't see a change in 2 weeks, contact your doctor.
Ringworm presents by appearing as circular rash usually on the neck, trunk or back. The rings can vary in size but most are quarter-sized lesions that are bumpy and irritated. Two common fungi called trichophyton and microsporum cause this easily treatable albeit contagious condition. Interestingly, ringworm is not caused by worms.
2. Oral Medication
Ringworm can also be treated by taking oral prescription medicine. Diflucan and Griseofulvin are two common medications that can treat ringworm, but they carry the risk of developing more adverse side effects like nausea, diarrhea and dizziness. They must also be taken for about 2 weeks in order for them to effectively heal the ringworm.
3. Shampoo
If the ringworm has spread to the scalp, look for a shampoo containing selenium sulfide. In order to cure the scalp infection, speak to your doctor about getting a prescription for a medicated shampoo created to specifically treat the condition. Since the ingredients are strong, be sure to adhere to the handling and usage instructions on the bottle.
4. Natural Remedies
There are a host of various natural remedies that many people employ to treat ringworm. Tea tree oil is a popular one that can be found at health food stores. Natural health specialists recommend combing 10 drops of tea tree oil with a pint of distilled water. This mixture is then applied three times per day on the irritated skin.
Other natural remedies include burdock root, echinacea, sepia, tellurium and sulfur. Echinacea is believed to speed up recovery because of its enhancing effects on the immune system. But since many of these remedies can be very powerful, you should consider seeking treatment from a trained naturopath or homeopathic doctor.
5. Diet
A cautionary measure to prevent a reoccurrence of ringworm or to speed along healing rates is to eat a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables along with your treatment of choice. The more colorful your plate looks, the better your chances for improving your immune response and thwarting off the infection.
