Alternative Medicines for Blood Pressure

High blood pressure makes the heart work harder and can contribute to hardening of the arteries. According to "Science Daily," more than 25 percent of the world's population has high blood pressure, also known as the silent killer. This condition exacerbates risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Hypertension is generally treated through a combination of proper diet, exercise, stress management and prescription medications. More and more people are interested in alternative medications for high blood pressure to lower their readings or maintain a normal pressure.

Garlic

A good alternative for lowering blood pressure can be found in garlic. Garlic contains a compound called adenosine that is a muscle relaxant and the heart, which pumps our blood, is a large muscle. Garlic can also dilate blood vessels which help the heart pump more effectively. It is thought that one clove of raw garlic works best for lowering blood pressure; however, if you cannot eat a fresh clove of garlic daily, a supplement will do.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid

According to a study completed at the University of Chicago's School of Medicine, Omega-3 fatty acids can lower blood pressure. The body cannot make this essential fatty acid and people generally lack omega-3 found in dietary products such as cold water fish, nuts, and seeds. Taking a daily supplement can lower blood pressure and maintain good cardiovascular health.

Beet Juice

A study suggests that a glass of beet juice can lower blood pressure. The London School of Medicine completed a study that demonstrated that beet juice can decrease blood pressure within the first hour of drinking the juice. It is believed that the nitrates turn into nitrites, which support blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. If you do not like beet juice eat lots of nitrate-rich vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, carrots, radishes, cabbage and spinach.

Supplements

There are several supplements that can be purchased at the local grocery or health food store that can help reduce high blood pressure. Calcium plays a vital role in good muscle contractions, for example the heart. Magnesium is a mineral that can help regulate blood pressure. Vitamin C is a good supplement to take daily as it is an antioxidant and protects the body's level of nitric oxide, which is important to blood-vessel function and can help maintain blood pressure.
