Atlanta is both the capital and the most populated city in the state of Georgia. It is home to the headquarters of major corporations like Delta Airlines and Coca-Cola, and it is also a town in which athletic competition plays a key role. Residents of the Atlanta area get their exercise in many different ways, with biking among them. The city is home to a number of bike clubs that organize riders who want to get out and enjoy the roads around Atlanta.

Identification

Atlanta's cycling clubs bring together local residents from many different careers and backgrounds who share an interest in health and fitness. These clubs set up rides of different distances on the city's roads or the streets and trails in the area outside city limits and provide support to riders of all ability levels. They invite anyone to get outside to enjoy the fresh air and exercise.

Types

The cycling clubs of Atlanta share the pursuit of fitness, but they came in different varieties. The Metro Atlanta Cycling Club, the Southern Bicycle League and the North Atlanta Riding Club are more traditional organizations that provide rides for people of all ability levels. Other clubs in the city prepare you for racing and provide serious training for competitive racers if that is your goal. Ladies on Spokes is a club that serves the women of south Atlanta, promoting cycling and a sense of community as part of a Christian women's club.

Benefits

The cycling clubs of Atlanta provide a push to get residents off the couch and elevate their heart rates. They provide you a chance to get involved in other community activities as well. Ladies on Spokes organizes and participated in cancer awareness rides, while the Southern Bicycle League has an advocacy group in which you can get out into the city to promote recreational cycling and educate your friends and neighbors about the health benefits of the activity. When you head out on these club rides, you will be able to ride with others who share your fitness level and can push you to improve.

Events

There is an organized cycling event almost every day of the week somewhere in Atlanta. Atlanta Cycling hosts weekday rides through the hilly roads of the city and long rides of between 40 and 53 miles every Saturday. You can follow up that long weekend haul with a 20-mile recovery ride on Monday. The Metro Atlanta Cycling Club gives you the chance to head out on 100-mile rides or to get competitive with road races or track racing at Velodrome in the city of East Point.

Activities

The cyclists who join these clubs experience the companionship of riding with others, but they are also active people who participate in other activities together. Atlanta Cycling takes its member on out-of-town trips and also will feed you after your ride at its post-ride dinners. Ladies On Spokes will change it up for you, as you can also join other members for speed walking, jogging, swimming, pilates and kayaking activities even when you are not cycling together.
