Face and neck hair vary in color, thickness and coverage. Darker, thicker hair is called terminal and lighter, thinner hair is called vellus. Although facial hair is most common in men, women can develop it as well. In the latter case, it generally grows in small patches. Whether the hair is on your face or neck, you can remove it with the same type of treatments. Most of the time, you can remove hair in your own home.

Step 1

Move a pair of electric clippers or a beard trimmer over your face and neck to remove excess hair and then shave off the rest. Wash your face and neck with warm water once you've removed the excess hair and apply shaving cream. Run a razor blade over your skin in short, smooth strokes in all areas where there is hair. Rinse the blade under the faucet every few strokes to keep it clean. Wash your face and neck again once you are done to remove excess debris. Dry yourself off.

Step 2

Purchase a home wax kit to remove your hair. Trim your hair with the clippers and apply the wax to your skin in the direction of hair growth. Use the applicator tool that comes with the kit to do this. Leave the wax on your skin for a few minutes and touch it lightly to see if it is tacky. Once it is, flatten out the cloth strip that comes with the kit over your skin and press down to flatten it out. Grab one corner of the strip and pull down forcefully to remove the hair. Repeat in all areas where you want hair removal.

Step 3

Heat up your hair with a warm washcloth before removing it with a depilatory cream. Apply the cream liberally and let it set up for five to 10 minutes to dissolve the hair. Take out a damp washcloth, place it on your skin, and wipe the hair off. Repeat in all areas where you want removal.

Step 4

Pluck the hair out with a pair of tweezers. Grasp one strand of hair with the tweezers close to the skin's surface. Pull the hair straight out in a steady motion instead of yanking it. Repeat with all the hairs you want to remove. If you yank the hair and it breaks off, you run the risk of getting an ingrown hair.

Step 5

Call a licensed electrologist for electrolysis. This is a permanent removal option where a needle gets inserted into each hair follicle and an electrical surge of electricity gets sent to the tip. The root gets "zapped" and the hair falls out as a result.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are trying to remove hair on the back of your neck, have an assistant on hand to help you especially with plucking. When using wax to remove your hair, follow the instructions that come with the kit to determine how long you should heat it. Use a depilatory cream that is safe for the face and neck. Do not let it come in contact with your mouth, eyes or any open sores. Also, read the instructions for how long you should let it set up. This varies depending on the manufacturer.
