Often called smoker's lines, vertical lip lines are more common in smokers, but they can affect everyone, according to Discovery Health. In addition to age, common causes of vertical lines include sun damage, repeated pursing of the lips and genetics. Lips also naturally get thinner with age as skin loses collagen, a substance that plumps up the skin and makes it appear smooth. Not only does collagen retreat, the skin itself becomes thinner with age, causing it to crease and wrinkle much more readily than it did when it was younger.

Step 1

Apply an anti-aging moisturizing treatment in the morning and evening as part of your regular skin-care routine.

Step 2

Apply an elastomizer lip balm under your lip liner and lipstick to tighten up fine lines.

Step 3

Apply a lip liner to prevent lipstick from bleeding into the lines and drawing attention to them.

Step 4

Apply a plumping lipstick to increase volume of the lips.

Step 5

Talk to a plastic surgeon about injecting collagen into the fine lines above your lip. Dermabrasion, botox and other cosmetic procedures can also eliminate lip lines.

Tips and Warnings

  • Research all of the benefits and complications associated with any elective cosmetic procedure that you are interested in receiving. If you feel that smoking or repeated pursing of the lips caused your lip lines, change your habits to prevent further wrinkling.
