First Signs of Early Pregnancy

Maybe your menstrual cycle is a few days late, or your breasts hurt when your husband simply looks at them. Both are among the first signs of pregnancy and should not be ignored. The sooner you realize you are with child, the sooner you can seek prenatal care. The earlier you and your baby are being monitored, the greater your chances of delivering a healthy baby.

Missed Menstrual Cycle

Typically the first indication of pregnancy, it usually occurs the month immediately following conception. According to the American Pregnancy Association, there are a few women who may either have their cycle or experience breakthrough bleeding (otherwise known as spotting). Even if you notice your cycle is lighter and does not last as long as normal, you should realize it can be a sign of pregnancy.

Feeling Tired

According to the Mayo Clinic, progesterone (a hormone produced during pregnancy), rises quickly during the first trimester. This can leave you feeling void of energy, wanting to do nothing but sleep.

Swollen Breasts

As soon as 2 weeks after conception, your breasts can become larger and begin feeling sore and tender. They may also feel heavier and full. All of these issues are because of hormonal changes and can are considered one of the first symptoms of pregnancy.

Feeling Faint

Early in your pregnancy, your blood vessels dilate, causing your blood pressure to drop. This can cause you to feel faint or dizzy. Low blood sugar, another common symptom of pregnancy, can also cause this to happen.

Constipation

In the early stages, your progesterone levels fly through the roof as they help prepare your body for the baby you have conceived. However, high progesterone levels can also cause your food to be digested more slowly, resulting in a backup in your intestines. Ultimately, this causes constipation.
