According to a review by Dr. Mohamed Elsaie in the journal Dermatologic Surgery, the reasons people develop stretch marks are unclear. Stretch marks, whose scientific term is Striae Distensae, develop in a predictable way. Elsaie explains that they usually start out pink and itchy, and then turn purplish and increase in length. Later, stretch marks typically turn white. Some topical creams may help fade stretch marks. If you have questions about your stretch marks, see your dermatologist.

M.D. Forte Hand And Body Cream 20% Glycolic Compound

A study done at the Naval Medical Center of Portsmouth, Virginia found that the application of a cream made with 20 percent glycolic acid helped improve the appearance and texture of stretch marks without adverse effects. M. D. Forte Hand and Body Cream 20% Glycolic Compound works by exfoliating the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing new healthy skin. It also may help to rebuild collagen, a key building block of connective tissue and skin.

Tretinoin

Tretinoin is a cream that is available by prescription only. Commonly used for both acne and the treatment of fine lines, the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center study found that it also is an effective treatment for fading stretch marks. Tretinoin helps skin with stretch marks to rebuild elastin and achieve a normal thickness. Tretinoin is marketed under several brand names including Renova, Atralin and Retin-A. It is a form of vitamin A, which is vital for the repair and maintenance of skin tissue. Make sure to use sunscreen when using this product, as it can cause increased sensitivity to the sun's rays.

Striae Stretch Mark Formula with Regenetrol Complex

In a double-blinded study by dermatologist Lawrence Moy, 80 percent of patients who applied Striae Stretch Mark Formula with Regenetrol Complex to their stretch marks showed improvement after eight weeks. Striae Stretch Mark Formula with Regenetrol Complex works by stimulating polyprotein and collagen production, thus helping the skin to regenerate and become thicker. Among the ingredients in this product are avocado extract, which has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and horsetail extract, a collagen booster.
