Your eyelashes serve an important purpose when it comes to protecting your eyes. Eyelashes are course hairs, which extend from the base of each eyelid. Eyelashes form a physical barrier that keeps your eyes free of debris as you go about your daily activities. In fact, the fluttering motion of your eyelashes deflects even the tiniest particles of dust that can irritate your eyes. Growing healthy, long and lustrous eyelashes begins with a proper hygiene routine.

Step 1

Remove your mascara every evening using a makeup remover specifically designed for the job. Look for a brand that specifies it is gentle enough for use on the eye area. Dab a pea-sized amount of eye makeup remover on a large cotton ball and wipe your lashes, removing all traces of mascara.

Step 2

Apply an eyelash conditioner to your lashes after removing your makeup. A lash conditioner will help keep your eyelashes soft and supple in between mascara applications. Apply a pea-sized amount of eyelash conditioner to your fingertips and massage it into the eyelashes of one eye. Repeat the process on your other eye.

Step 3

Comb your eyelashes after applying the eyelash conditioner. Use an eyebrow comb, which you can purchase in a pharmacy or beauty supply store. Start at the base of your eyelashes and comb upwards, separating each lash.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you do not have eyelash conditioner on hand, use almond or olive oil. If you curl your eyelashes with an eyelash curler, use a curler that has a foam cushion to protect your lashes. Always curl your eyelashes before applying mascara.
  • Do not tug or pull on your eyelashes when removing your mascara. Pulling on your eyelashes can damage the hair follicles, preventing new lash growth.
