If you have milia spots on your face, you know that these white or yellow spots are as mysterious as they are embarrassing. The causes of milia can't be traced to lifestyle, hygiene or diet. Although there is no health threat posed by these spots, which are filled with keratin and frequently occur near the eyes, eyelids and cheeks, they are almost always considered undesirable to the sufferer. In some cases, milia spots will simply disappear on their own. However, you may prefer to take steps toward eliminating these skin flaws at a faster rate. You should not attempt to actually remove or pierce milia spots on your own; this is best done by a doctor.
Step 1
Create a "facial sauna." Placing a hot, wet washcloth over the affected skin for a few minutes can be useful in drawing out debris from your skin and sloughing off dead skin cells. Be sure that the washcloth is at a pleasant temperature for you. It should be as warm as you can comfortably tolerate, but it should never be painful or uncomfortable.
Step 2
Exfoliate. Facial scrubs, such as the kind sold over the counter at drug stores, can also assist you in removing a top layer of your skin. When the top layer of skin is scrubbed off, the milia cysts may be induced to fall off. You can use the kind of exfoliating scrub commonly sold for acne. BBC Health recommends scrubs that contain salicylic acid, but you should consult the pharmacist about your skin type and which chemicals may be too harsh for you. Be sure to tell the pharmacist about any skin sensitivities or allergies you might have.
Step 3
See a dermatologist about removal. According to dermatological surgeon Manu Mehra, as reported in the Times Online.uk, your milia spots may be persistent to the point that you will want them professionally removed. This procedure can be done quickly and without scarring in a doctor's office. Your doctor will use a very fine needle to puncture the milia cysts and remove them. While some facialists may also offer this procedure, a doctor is much more likely to know how to prevent infection.
