Colloidal gold is formed when gold is reduced to particles that are small enough to remain suspended in ionized water. This solution is taken internally to treat a number of health conditions. Gold is considered biologically benign and has been used therapeutically for centuries, according to the National Mining Association website. However, since colloidal gold is categorized as a dietary supplement, it is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Medical research is continuing in the therapeutic value of colloidal gold, although the subject remains largely unexplored.

Temperature Stabilization

Using colloidal gold might enhance the body's ability to regulate temperature in the case of fever and chills, noted a Meridian Institute report on headaches.

Mood Stabilization

People taking colloidal gold report the alleviation of stress and anxiety. The Natural News website reports that colloidal gold is one of the least known yet most effective mood stabilizers and effectively relieves many premenstrual syndrome symptoms.

Improved Cognitive Functions

In a 2008 pilot study, physicians Guy E. Abraham, Souhaila A. McReynolds and Joel S. Dill tested the effect of colloidal gold on cognitive function. After several baseline cognitive tests, study participants were retested after one month on colloidal gold. Test results showed increase in the mean IQ scores by 20 percent.

Improved Neurological Function

Using colloidal gold might help neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. A study conducted at the University of Bonn, Germany, Department of Epileptology found improved neurological function and a decrease in the number of seizures in patients with Rasmussen encephalitis when treated with colloidal gold.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

The use of colloidal gold for the relief of arthritic symptoms has been in practice for hundreds of years. In medieval Europe, gold infused drinks were used to "comfort sore limbs," an early reference to arthritis. It continues to gain the attention of the modern medical community. In a study conducted by Guy E. Abraham and Peter B. Himmel, the use of colloidal gold caused rapid and significant decrease of the tenderness and swelling of joints.

Treatment of Cancer

An early study conducted by Captain William S. Baker Jr. explored the effectiveness of colloidal gold in the treatment of carcinoma of the cervix. Those early findings showed it to be an effective weapon for control of stage I and stage II cancers of the cervix. A more recent study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that colloidal gold might help stabilize and inhibit tumor growth in some patients.
