Severe anxiety is a condition that interferes with your daily life and relationships. Some people develop anxiety disorders as young as childhood, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms may include restlessness, constant obsessing about concerns, sweating and rapid heartbeat. People with this condition feel anxious when there isn't an apparent reason for worry. Living with a severe case of anxiety is a challenge. However, this disorder can improve with lifestyle changes, special medications and coping techniques.

Step 1

Use antidepressants. Antidepressants work to influence brain chemical activities, according to the Mayo Clinic. Make an appointment with your physician to determine if using an antidepressant is appropriate for your anxiety disorder.

Step 2

Request the anti-anxiety medication buspirone from your doctor. This medication is commonly used to treat anxiety disorders. Take the medication as directed by your physician. If you have side effects, such as headaches, nervousness or insomnia, contact your doctor right away.

Step 3

Use short-term medications, such as benzodiazephines. These medications assist with cases of severe anxiety, such as panic attacks. Commonly prescribed medications include clonazepam, diazepam and alprazolam, according to the Mayo Clinic. These medications aren't recommended for long-term use and can be habit forming. Talk with your doctor if you experience muscle coordination issues, drowsiness or memory problems.

Step 4

Attend counseling to work out underlying issues causing anxiety. A licensed psychotherapist will assist in teaching you skills to prevent severe anxiety. She teaches coping skills that assist in gaining more control over your life by changing your responses to situations. Find a local therapist through the American Psychotherapy Association (see Resources).

Step 5

Implement lifestyle changes. According to the Mayo Clinic, getting daily exercise can reduce stress, improve your mood and decrease anxiety levels. Eating a diet that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins may also help. People with anxiety need to focus on getting plenty of sleep, which can reduce symptoms of this condition.

Tips and Warnings

  • When taking medications for severe anxiety, it's important to be patient. Some medications, such as antidepressants, can take several weeks to work.
  • People struggling with severe anxiety should avoid alcohol use, according to the Mayo Clinic. Using alcohol can make the symptoms of anxiety worse.
