What Food Is High in Carbohydrates?

Food provides the human body with carbohydrates. Some foods like vegetables are low in carbohydrates, while others provide more than 100 g of carbohydrates per serving. The two types of carbohydrates are simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates come from fruit, dairy products and white sugar. Complex carbohydrates come from whole grains and beans.

Breakfast Cereal

Some breakfast cereals are high in carbohydrates. The U.S. Department of Agriculture publication "Nutritive Value of Foods" provides a list of breakfast cereals common to a typical American diet and the grams of carbohydrates in each serving. The breakfast cereals with the highest amount of carbohydrates in 1 cup servings include Basic 4 or Chex multi-bran with 41 g of carbohydrates; Honey Nut Clusters with 43 g of carbohydrates; frosted, bite-size Mini Wheats with 45 g of carbohydrates; and Kellogg's Rasin Bran with 47 g of carbohydrates.

Grains

Whole grains and whole-grain flours are healthy, high-carbohydrate foods. The "Nutritive Value of Foods" supplies nutritional information for grains in 1 cup servings. The grains with the most grams of carbohydrates per serving include cooked couscous or cooked bulgur wheat with 34 g of carbohydrates; whole groat, buckwheat flour with 85 g of carbohydrates; whole grain, yellow cornmeal with 94 g of carbohydrates; all-purpose, unsifted, enriched white flour with 95 g of carbohydrates; and uncooked bulgur wheat with 106 g of carbohydrates.

Beans

Add beans to your daily diet menu for a food high in carbohydrates. According to nutritional information on 1 cup servings of dried beans provided by the "Nutritive Value of Foods," varieties of beans common in the United States with the highest amount of carbohydrates include lima beans, 39 g of carbohydrates; red kidney beans, 40 g of carbohydrates; black beans, 41 g of carbohydrates; pinto beans, 44 g of carbohydrates; and navy beans, 48 g of carbohydrates.

Cake

Eat cake for a food that contributes a high amount of carbohydrates to your daily diet. As listed by the "Nutritive Value of Foods," cake with the highest amounts of carbohydrates in one-piece servings include sponge cake with vanilla frosting, 38 g of carbohydrates; white cake without frosting, 42 g of carbohydrates; angel food cake, 55 g of carbohydrates; pineapple upside down cake, 58 g of carbohydrates; and white cake with coconut frosting, 71 g of carbohydrates.
