Individuals diagnosed with type 1 and some diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are required to inject insulin into their bodies. Many people use syringes to deliver their insulin, and those syringes require proper disposal. Improper disposal of used diabetic syringes could create a health risk by exposing the public and waste workers to needle sticks and possible infections. Improperly disposed-of syringes may go to recycling locations in error, creating additional risks. Properly dispose of diabetic syringes for public safety.

Step 1

Obtain a large, reusable plastic or metal container. An ideal container for collecting used diabetic syringes has a small opening with a cap or lid that screws on. Bleach bottles, liquid laundry detergent containers and milk jugs work well.

Step 2

Write "Biohazard" on two labels and attach to both sides of the container. Keep the container in a safe place.

Step 3

Replace the cap over the needle of the used syringe. If you do not have a cap for your needle, use an insulin syringe needle clipper to cut the needle from the syringe.

Step 4

Drop the syringe and needle into your container and close the lid tightly.

Step 5

Secure the lid to your syringe container with duct tape once it is full.

Step 6

Dispose of your used syringes at an authorized drop-off location. Some pharmacies, police departments and fire stations allow you to dispose of syringes through them. Call your city or county public health or waste departments and check with your doctor for additional approved diabetic syringe disposal locations.
