Dermatologist Nicholas Perricone developed a diet program to slow the aging process down, promote fat loss and decrease inflammation associated with fat gain. The diet program promotes high intakes of fatty fish, especially salmon, to increase your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Perricone makes a connection between accelerated aging and obesity seen in America and devised a plan to combat inflammation associated with both fat gain and aging.

Basics of Inflammation

Dr. Perricone's diet fights inflammation that is produced from increase immune system response to infection and irritation. According to Dr. Perricone, this type of inflammation isn't necessarily felt and can become a chronic problem for your body, which promotes out-of-control appetites, excessive fat gain, food cravings and chronic diseases. His perspective is that food has a connection to how much inflammation you experience.

High Omega-3 Intake

The diet regimen includes high intakes of fatty fish to boost Omega-3 intakes along with taking oral supplements. Dr. Perricone says that when you consume high amounts of Omega-3 fats, your body responses with weight loss, better insulin response, improved muscle mass, healthier immune system response, radiant skin, decreased appetite, stable blood sugars, better mood and higher energy levels. Dr. Perricone states the essential fatty acids provided by Omega-3 fats increases your body's capacity to burn fat and promote weight loss, especially when you decrease your high-glycemic carb intake.

Glycemic Index

The Perricone diet focuses on carbohydrates that promote a slow increase in blood sugar levels and provide a high amount of nutrients, especially fiber. Dr. Perricone says low-glycemic foods reduce your insulin production, promote weight loss, sustains your energy levels and don't promote out-of-control immune responses.

Focus on Anti-aging

The Perricone diet lays out 10 "superfoods" that are high in fiber, promote anti-inflammatory immune responses and are high in essential fatty acids. Eating these "superfoods" increases your intake of antioxidant vitamins and essential fatty acids that promote healthier and more vibrant skin. According to Dr. Perricone, your skin is a reflection of your internal health and how much inflammation your body produces. By changing your diet to lessen the production of inflammation immune responses, your skin takes on a more youthful, radiant appearance.

Diet Precautions

The glycemic index hasn't been scientifically proven to work in the long term to control weight, according to B. Sloth and A. Astrup in their paper "Low Glycemic Index Diets and Body Weight Low GI Diet and Body Weight." Blood sugar responses to food can easily be lowered by combining a high-glycemic food with one that is considered low glycemic. This doesn't support focusing on exclusively eating low-glycemic foods as a means of controlling blood sugar and insulin levels, they say. Also, the Perricone diet recommends high levels of cold-water fish that exceeds recommended intakes based on pollutants and contaminants found in salmon and other Omega-3 rich fish.
