One of the most important things to consider when you're expecting a baby is where the baby will sleep. When shopping for baby bedding, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the different patterns, colors and textures available. It's important to keep in mind that newborns spend most of their time sleeping and their designated sleeping area should be both comfortable and safe. As your child grows, different types of bedding will be necessary.
Bassinet Bedding
A bassinet is a freestanding baby bed that typically features a smaller, thinner mattress and an adjustable canopy or hood. According to Eng Baby, their oval design and small sleeping area are intended to create a cocoonlike atmosphere to help newborns adjust to life outside the womb. Bassinets are typically designed to be used by babies from birth to about 4 months. Bassinet bedding typically includes a fitted sheet to cover the mattress, a padded liner that fits inside the bassinet, a hood cover and a decorative skirt. Most bassinet bedding sets also include a pillow and blanket. You may also choose to incorporate a waterproof mattress pad.
Cradle Bedding
If your baby likes to be rocked to sleep, you may consider using a cradle until she's old enough for a regular crib. Cradles are typically smaller, narrower versions of cribs with curved rails on the bottom that allow them to rock. While bassinets feature solid sides, cradles are fashioned similarly to cribs, with slatted sides. A bedding set for a cradle typically includes a bumper, which is designed to act as a cushion and protect the baby's head from hitting the side rails. Toys R Us recommends using bumpers until your child is old enough to stand. Cradle bedding also includes a fitted sheet and a quilted comforter.
Crib Bedding
A crib is larger than both a bassinet and cradle and may be used from birth until your child reaches toddler age. Crib bedding is very similar to cradle bedding, in that it includes a bumper to protect children against the side rails, a fitted sheet and quilted comforter or blanket. Cribs typically feature thicker mattresses and Baby New Home recommends choosing a firmer mattress with snug-fitting sheets to ensure the baby does not become tangled in the bedding. Most crib bedding sets also come with a skirt or dust ruffle that fits under the mattress and adds a decorative touch.
Toddler Bedding
Toddler bedding is designed for children who have outgrown their crib but aren't ready for a full-size bed. The majority of toddler beds are designed to use regular crib mattresses but they incorporate both a fitted sheet and a flat sheet. If you use a mattress pad or cover with your crib bedding, you can also use it with your toddler bedding. Toddler bedding sets may also come with a full-size comforter in place of the quilted comforter, a bed skirt and pillowcases or shams.
