Pyrethrum Side Effects

Pyrethrum is a used in gels, shampoos and foams to treat lice on the body. The drug kills the lice after it is absorbed into their systems. It is used in combination with piperonyl butoxide, which makes pyrethrum more effective. When using the product, it should be kept away from the nose, eyes and other mucous membranes. It should not be swallowed or inhaled. The medicine should be stored at room temperature and kept away from moisture, heat and direct light. The side effects of pyrethrum may or may not occur in patients, but if they do, medical attention may be needed.

Side Effects

The Mayo Clinic lists the side effects of products with pyrethrum as the appearance of skin irritation that was not present before using the medicine, a runny or stuffy nose, sudden attacks of sneezing and a skin rash or infection. Breathing can become difficult and can include wheezing. Breathing problems are an indication of an allergic reaction. Merck lists redness of the skin and itching as potential effects.

Medical Conditions

The use of pyrethrum can make the medical condition of inflammation of the skin worse. Consult a physician about how other medical conditions might be affected by the use of medicine containing pyrethrum.

Allergic Reaction

Medical attention should be sought immediately if there is an allergic reaction to the medicine. The symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, swelling of the face and hands, tightness in the chest and trouble with breathing. There can be swelling in the mouth and throat. A tingling sensation in the mouth and throat indicates an allergic reaction.
