According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2007, approximately 5.7 million people had diabetes but remained undiagnosed, while another 59 million may have had pre-diabetes. A basic metabolic blood test provides blood sugar results, though a high blood sugar level does not always imply a diagnosis of diabetes, as noted by MedlinePlus. Discuss any concerns about abnormal lab work with your physician.

Step 1

Request a copy of your lab work when you get the tests done.

Step 2

Look on the lab report for the word "glucose."

Step 3

Check the number next to "glucose." This is your blood sugar level.

Tips and Warnings

  • A normal fasting blood glucose level is under 100 mg/dL. A fasting blood glucose reading of 100 to 125 mg/dL may indicate pre-diabetes or impaired fasting glucose. A fasting blood glucose of 126 mg/dL or higher may signify diabetes, but further testing is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
