Honolulu offers many hiking clubs that explore more than 80 trails on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The island's distinct foliage provides a breathtaking backdrop for any hiking event. If you are looking to join a hiking group, you're sure to find one that suits your interest and skill level.
Sierra Club
The Hawaiian chapter of the Sierra Club focuses on the love of hiking and giving back to the land. Many scheduled hikes include work sites and assignments that restore trails and coastal areas around Oahu. Members of this club have a shared love for preserving Hawaii's special ecosystem. This club accepts various forms of donations and "green gifts," donations given in someone else's name. Multiple hiking opportunities are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays for members and their guests to choose from.
Hawaiian Trail Mountain Club
Created in 1910, the Hawaiian Trail Mountain Club reports its membership is in the hundreds. The club also welcomes nonmembers, who are asked for a monetary donation. Those looking to join the club are required to take three HTMC-guided hikes, are asked to complete an application, must be sponsored by two current members and pay membership dues. For an annual membership fee, members and their guests have use of the HTMC clubhouse, picnic areas and facilities for outdoor sports. The group maintains hiking trails on a volunteer basis. In addition to hiking, the club holds social events throughout the year.
Hiking with Dogs
Two groups in Honolulu hike alongside man's best friend. The Humane Society's Paws on Path Hiking Club meets on the first Saturday of the month and alternates hiking trails. The club does not charge a fee, although donations go directly to the Humane Society.
The Hiking Oahu with Dogs Club invites those with or without pets to join. Trail outings vary between one to three times a month. The club requires that owners leash their pets, bring bags for waste and vaccinate their animals.
Like Hike
Honolulu's gay hiking group, Like Hike, meets twice a month on Sundays to explore Oahu's trails. Planned hikes are designated by trail difficulty, and each member should determine his level of experience. In addition, Like Hike offers planned trips to neighboring Islands for exploration. Those who would like to join the group must contact the group leader before becoming members.
Military Hike
The U.S. Military Morale Welfare and Recreation program offers hiking opportunities to service members and their families. Depending on branch of service, Hawaii's MWR sponsors hiking events and groups all over the island of Oahu. The Single Marine & Sailor Program hosts hiking events for single active-duty members. The Air Force and Navy joint base at Hickam and Pearl Harbor offers hikes for military members and their families. Hawaii Coast Guard members can participate in Hike 'N Splash, and the Army offers its Walk Off the Wait club.
