Ocular Side Effects of Chemotherapy

Ocular side effects are side effects related to vision and to the eyes. Chemotherapy is a therapy that is used to kill cancer cells, but the therapy can also affect normal cells. Some side effects of chemotherapy affect the eyes.

Cataracts

The development of cataracts is a side effect that can occur as a result of chemotherapy. Cataracts do not cause pain, but over time they will cause a loss of vision.

Pink Eye

Pink eye is a viral or bacterial infection in the eye. It is also called "conjunctivitis." It can occur as a result of chemotherapy due to the body's decreased ability to fight off infections.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma can develop as a result of chemotherapy. Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to the optic nerve and leads to blindness.

Photophobia

Other ocular side effects of chemotherapy include photophobia, a decrease in the ability of the eye to tolerate light.

Dry or Watery Eyes

Dry eye syndrome is another side effect of chemotherapy. With dry eye syndrome, the ability of the eyes to produce tears is reduced. Chemotherapy can also have watery eyes as a side effect.
